Though you recite much scripture,
If you are unaware and do not act accordingly
You are like a cowherd counting others’ cattle,
Not reaping the fruits of the spiritual life.
Though you recite little scripture,
If you go from dhamma to dhamma,
Abandoning passion, hatred, and delusion,
Seeing clearly, with a free heart,
Not clinging to this world or the next,
You reap the fruits of the spiritual life.
